Email server in a globe

We just finished building a new email server for our own domains. We decided to have it as a stand alone server to isolate it from the webserver, so problems on one won’t take out both the website and email. It doesn’t have any of the webserver specific software. The accounts can still be managed by a website that is installed on a web server. Setting up these servers take a bit of time due to all the manual configuring needed for security and antispam.

Why would anyone want their own email server? Having your own email server gives you more control and flexibility. You can setup as many accounts as you want and create email aliases. This allows you to use temporary emails when you need to create an account on a website. Also all the data is on your own server. You can move it between hosts. This is also for people that want increased privacy and don’t want their email stored on computers someone else controls.

These servers are not for marketing, just everyday business and personal use. Sending out newsletters and other marketing emails would require more work and monitoring so you don’t get flagged as a spammer.

Next we’ll be re-building our main webserver.

If you want to have the your own email server or need help with an existing one, let use know. We can build medium level security servers. We use the standard Linux open source programs (Postfix, Dovecot), but we can figure out most other setups.
